More information about All My Sons

As part of their season honouring Arthur Miller with a noteworthy double-bill, the Old Vic presents this classic drama about the bitter cost of chasing the American Dream. This gripping production of “All My Sons” has a star-studded, award-winning cast led by stars of stage and film Sally Field (“Forrest Gump,” “Norma Rae”) and Bill Pullman (“While You Were Sleeping,” “Independence Day”) as Kate and Joe Keller.

Directly after World War II, the Kellers still haven’t come to terms with the loss of their missing son Larry, who disappeared during his military duty and hasn’t been heard from in three years. Meanwhile, the younger son, Chris has become enamoured with Larry’s old sweetheart Ann Deever and is set on marrying her. Unbeknownst to the lovebirds, Chris’ father Joe has been harbouring a damaging secret for years, which once revealed could shatter the precarious happiness they’ve carefully built. “All My Sons” traces the hubris of the quintessential American business owner to its ugliest possible eventuality.

What to watch for

Although Sally Field has a long, thoroughly decorated career in Hollywood and Broadway including two Oscar wins and a Tony Award nomination, this production of “All My Sons” marks her debut performance on a London stage.

Miller based “All My Sons” on a real story printed in an Ohio newspaper that his mother-in-law showed him. In 1943, an aeronautical plant was found to have knowingly approved defective engines for military use which led to the dismissal of Army Air Forces technical adviser Charles W. Bond.

The cynical portrayal of the American Dream and the U.S. military in “All My Sons” is one of the reasons why Miller was called before the committee of the infamous McCarthy trials durings the Red Scare for suspicion of communism.
