Marianne Elliott’s ‘glorious’ (Evening Standard) production of COMPANY, is currently wowing audiences at the Gielgud Theatre. Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s “Company” is the story of Bobby, a relentless bachelor celebrating his 35th birthday with his married friends. But for the first time, the London production of the legendary musical features a woman in the central role and the musical’s first same-sex couple. Starring Rosalie Craig and Broadway legend Patti LuPone, this modern adaptation gives a fascinating insight into love and relationships from a woman’s point of view.
Bobbi spends her birthday contemplating her unmarried state and surrounded by friends who flood her with questions about her own life. Over a series of of dinner parties and conversations about the pros and cons of marriage, Bobbi begins to make sense of her single lifestyle. This enlightening and honest look at adult relationships features some of Sondheim’s most recognisable songs including “Being Alive” and “The Ladies Who Lunch.” Directed by Tony Award winner Marianne Elliott, this production reimagines Sondheim’s work for a contemporary audience.
What to watch for
The original production opened on Broadway in 1970 and won six Tony Awards, and the 2006 Broadway revival won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical.
Stephen Sondheim was consulted from the start about this new adaptation. He took a bit of persuading, but after a recording of a workshop version of the production was sent to him in 2016, he gave it his stamp of approval.
This production marks Patti LuPone’s first appearance on a West End stage in 25 years. Last time she tread the boards in London was in the first London production of “Sunset Boulevard,” in which she originated the role of Norma Desmond.
This will be first gender-reversed production of the show to be officially approved by Sondheim.
